Sharbhang Ashram is one of the most sacred and ancient pilgrimage sites in the Chitrakoot region, closely associated with the Ramayana and the life of Maharishi Sharbhang (Sarabhanga Rishi). Located about 58 km southeast of Chitrakoot, deep within the forested hills near Tikariya village, the ashram is a place of immense spiritual significance where Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lakshman are believed to have visited during their exile. Even today, the peaceful surroundings, dense forests, natural water sources, and ancient temples make it a popular destination for pilgrims, spiritual seekers, and nature lovers.
According to the Valmiki Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas, Maharishi Sharbhang was a great sage known for his intense penance and spiritual wisdom. It is believed that when Lord Rama arrived at his hermitage, the sage postponed his journey to Brahmaloka so that he could have the divine darshan of Lord Rama. After receiving the blessings of Shri Ram, Maharishi Sharbhang entered Yogagni (sacred yogic fire) and voluntarily gave up his mortal body, attaining liberation (Moksha). This remarkable event makes Sharbhang Ashram one of the most revered places on the Ram Van Gaman Path.
The ashram is surrounded by the scenic Vindhya forests and features a Shri Ram Temple, a sacred kund (natural water pond), meditation areas, and peaceful walking trails. A unique natural spring continuously feeds the kund from below the ground, and devotees consider its water highly sacred. A popular local belief says, "Sau Baar Ganga, Ek Baar Sarbhanga," meaning that taking a holy dip at this sacred kund is believed to bestow spiritual merit equal to bathing many times in the River Ganga.
Sharbhang Ashram also marks an important stage in Lord Rama's journey through the forests of Chitrakoot. After leaving Atri and Anusuya Ashram, Lord Rama travelled through Viradh Kund before reaching Sharbhang Ashram, where he received guidance from the sage. The nearby forests and surrounding hills are connected with several other ancient hermitages and sacred sites mentioned in the Ramayana, making this region an important spiritual circuit for devotees.
Today, Sharbhang Ashram continues to attract visitors seeking peace, meditation, and spiritual experiences away from crowded pilgrimage centres. The tranquil atmosphere, lush greenery, birdsong, and untouched natural landscape create an ideal environment for prayer and self-reflection. Although the ashram remains relatively less commercialized, its religious importance, mythological heritage, and natural beauty make it one of the hidden spiritual gems of Chitrakoot and an essential destination for those exploring the Ramayana trail.
